THE SYNOPSIS. . .

TIME. It was such a funny concept to think about. It didn't really exist at all: it was an abstract idea that was enforced by society. As the world advanced, it became dependent on this structured way of life. Sixty minutes in an hour, twenty-four hours in a day, seven days in a week. People soon forgot what life had been like before clocks ruled their every moment. They began to demand more and more time, squeezing out each drop of the golden ambrosia that they could, and yet it was still never enough. They wished that there more hours—five, ten, twenty— in a day, even willing to lose sleep for it. So, what would people think of those who had all the time in the world? They would be jealous, certainly, and perhaps a little pleased that someone had been able to outwit such an unrelenting foe.

As someone on the opposite side of this debate, Rose Daly could confirm that the jealousy, at least, was unfounded. In their desire to conquer time, people often forgot the sacrifices that they would have to make along the way: to stay the same, even as everyone you loved grew old around you and, eventually, died— that was a torture she would never wish on her greatest enemy. To remain evergreen in a world that cycled through seasons was a trial that very few understood. The only anchor that she had to keep herself steady in the shifting sands of time were her memories. Even as painful as they could be, Rose held them close to her heart, afraid that if she let them go she would lose herself as time slipped out of her grasp.

She hadn't always been this cynical; in fact, she had been downright optimistic throughout her childhood, her laughter free and her mind unburdened. She could pinpoint the exact moment when this change had taken place: on the evening of her twenty-first birthday. Her present that year had not been a Gift, but a. . . curse.

Authors spend many hours working on chapters for free (because we (usually) love to do it!); doing this diminishes their dedication to create unique characters and plots. I believe myself to be very tolerant of how readers interact with my books but this is one thing on which I will allow absolutely no flexibility.
